There's nothing the devil likes more than to put distractions, noise and confusion in front of us to pull us off track from our assignment. He is the author of confusion and is out to cloud our minds. Each of us only have 24 hours in each day and as Ephesians 5:16-17 says, Make the most of every opportunity; don't act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.
Some of us have so much on our "to do" list that we waste time trying to figure out what to tackle first. Like a game of ping pong, there's a constant back and forth conversation going on in our heads. One voice saying "make that phone call" and the other voice saying "check your email first". Then at the end of the day when things are still lingering on that list, we get frustrated knowing we could have done more.
Praying in the spirit keeps us focused on our assignment and in tune to things that pop up as distractions. They can be good things, but maybe bad timing. Good people, good activities, volunteer opportunities...
We must stay focused and in tune to what the Holy Spirit tells us. He can see ahead to what different events or people might sidetrack us.
One thing that helps me tremendously is first thing in the morning to ask God what needs to be done that day. As I listen, I write down what comes to mind. Then I'm more likely to act quickly on a task knowing God put it on my list! Also, who doesn't enjoy the satisfaction of crossing things off a list? :)
